firestone robotics community outreach

Firestone Robotics has been involved in many community projects, most notably Boat Races and Middle School Robotics, but has also been active within the community in many other ways

Boat races

Dating back to before the beginning of the club, Boat Races have been an annual staple of Firestone Robotics' outreach to those who are interested in Engineering

Middle School robotics has also been an annual event that started before the first FHS robotics team was assembled, predating the club by two years. The club has ran the event since then and every year has produced a large turn out of competitiors from various Akron Middle Schools

Essex playground project

Playground-Project-5.jpg

At Essex Elementary School, which is about a mile from Firestone, the club looked to help the community in a new direction. Many club members pitched in and helped renovate the playground with plenty of unique designs and animals located across the playground. It was not an easy task, however. The Firestone Marching Band also practices at the location, and overnight two men broke into the band's instrument trailer and used paint to destroy instruments. They also wrecked much of the work that we had done, forcing a day to clean up the mess. However, club quickly overcame this new obstacle and completed the project only a few days later. Now, with much of the paint having chipped away due to the harsh Akron weather, club has looked at heading back to the playground to bring it back to glory.

Akron rubberducks game

Recently, on August 24, 2019, the club went to Canal Park in downtown Akron for the Akron RubberDucks game. We came to the game to build a robot to throw the first pitch and display their robots. Shown above, a baseball fan is driving a robot to put a cube into the alliance tower. With about 100 visitors throughout the day, club helped in making the Akron Community more aware of VEX Robotics by allowing them to be hands-on. It is important to note that NIHF STEM High School also was involved in this.

The event was published on the Akron Beacon Journal. Read the article here

The club has been involved in numerous other events, too many to name here, but these are the four biggest projects that club has undertaken
